Virunga Lodge is an angelic 3 star hotel situated near Volcanoes National Park. The park is one of a high bio-diversity of plant and tree species. The major creatures of the forest are the critically endangered mountain gorillas living in the national park. They feed on roots, leaves and fruits from the parks many trees and bamboo. Mountain gorillas do live freely within the ecosystem, do not survive in captivity and can only live in highland area. Over years they have faced threat in extinction. Volcanoes National Park has about 30% of the world’s remaining population of gorillas. Others are in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is part of the series of Virunga mountains covering the Rwandan part that extends to the protected areas of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is home to the tomb of the American primatologist Dian Fossey whose research center was based at Karisoke. She was so passionate about conservation of the mountain gorilla (gorilla belingei belingei) and her works are still prevailed to-date, some of these have been featured in the movie Gorillas in the Mist.
